The first thing we must understand is that the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) has been happily taken over by the digital marketing establishment. It is a means to simplify developing the marketing materials that they view as essential to drumming up business. It leads ordinary people like you and me down the path of looking at AI as the development of a race of machines, robots if you will, that will be as smart if not smarter than us. That is a disturbing thought for most to the extent that some people view AI as a prelude to the apocalypse.
The “A” in AI does not stand for Armageddon
However, things are less cataclysmic than that. While the ultimate goal for smart machines is to mimic human behavior, reasoning and decision-making powers, the truth is that we, as humans, don’t even know many things about our brain and how it does many of the functions it performs. The thing is, we humans aren’t smart enough yet.
The fact is that we need to think more plainly and understand that AI represents many different technologies. AI is the product of applying the knowledge gained through research and the collection and processing of the petabytes of data that is created every day. The one thing that is certain is that the technologies created under the auspices of AI will be game changers. Change scares people, which leads to talks of the apocalypse and the making of movies like the “Terminator” franchise heralding the rise of the machines. The truth of the matter is that AI has led to the development of technologies that augment human intelligence, not replace it.
AI Imploded and Rebuilt in a Circle of Trust
Industry is leading the AI charge. As such, they need to take the extra step of getting the consumer onboard. So, let’s build a circle of trust by talking about some of those technologies and putting a real face to the words artificial intelligence. What we will attempt to show is the circle of empowerment, accountability, capability, and trust.
A Sample of the Technologies Involving Artificial Intelligence
The implied progress includes enhancing perception and understanding, improving reasoning and problem solving, more efficient learning and training, and refining the means to interact with the environment and people.
One could almost look at AI as enabling the development of a better user interface for every one of us to engage with complex technology and software that had been reserved for very few experts. Let’s take a quick peek at what kind of issues we’re talking about.
- Human-in-the-loop Crowdsourcing – this is the use of human instruments such as sociological and psychological datasets combined with machine learning techniques to improve the human quality of life by designing tasks to the insights gained from analysing this data.
- Consulting and Systems Integration Services (C&SI) – this is essentially the use of smart machines and cognitive computing to help companies revamp their IT, HR and operational processes to the benefit of the employees of the enterprise. In other words, learn about the human condition and sentiments when hiring, interfacing with the company technology stack and designing business processes using human insights. data.
- Neuromorphic Hardware – we would be remiss in not talking about the branch of IA dedicated to finding a path to human-level artificial intelligence by exploring processors’ architectures that mimic the brain’s. Neuromorphic chips implement deep learning algorithms directly into specialised processing units made of hundred thousands of neurons to provide faster, more efficient and more comprehensive learning.
- Industry 4.0/Smart Factory Industrial Revolution – The Smart Factory initiatives coming out of the Industry 4.0 revolution are another direct example. It’s being driven by the need to produce goods faster and at a lower cost so that companies can remain competitive in the marketplace. The technologies driving the Smart Factory are the development of tiny sensors and communication devices that drive the Internet of things (IoT). The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) provides petabytes of production machine data. These machines that are designed by model-based systems engineering (MBSE) are driven by predictive analysis with the support of a virtual clone of the production line. The purpose here is to improve the efficiency and optimise the use.
AI Influenced Change is All Around Us
The workplace and home life are in the throes of evolutionary change, and the technologies of artificial intelligence are part of it:
- Smart cars are here. If you have a relatively recent model car, the evidence of AI is in the control systems that operate the vehicle. Your car will brake on its own if the sensor detects a hazardous situation before you do. The algorithm in your vehicle’s computer thinks for you. The future is here!
- Today, every home is getting smarter. Refrigerator control, thermostats to control HVAC systems, remote lighting controls, and security systems are all accessible remotely via your smartphone. They can detect abnormalities in the conditions at your home and warn you wherever you are in the world. That’s the power of IoT combined with AI influenced technology.
- Health and wellness wearables like Fitbit are also influenced by AI initiatives, with data being fed automatically to a device that can tell you whether you did healthy things that day or how you slept that night.
